Survey Taken May 6, 2010:  In just three years, the South of the James Market at Forest Hill Park has become a major regional attraction according to a survey performed Saturday at the market.

The survey indicated than more than 1,500 customers visited the market, representing more than 30 zip codes.  Visitors reported zip codes from as far away as Newport News.  The bulk of the market-goers (37%) came from the 23225 zip code, representing the immediate neighborhood, but 20% of the customers surveyed came from outside the City of Richmond zip code list.  Every zip code in the city was represented.

The market continues to be an important economic resource as well, with more than 75 vendors regularly at the market on Saturday mornings from 8:00 to noon. In addition to regular over the counter sales, a number of community supported agriculture outlets (CSA) are also using the market as a delivery point to subscribers.

Vendors at the market come from as far away as Westmoreland County of the Northern Neck to Prince Edward County near Farmville.  Vendors are selling goods as disparate as organic fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs and poultry, artisan breads and cheeses, handmade crafts and pottery, and locally roasted coffee.

For the third year, the Market is paid for by Council Member Kathy Graziano and the vendors fees.  The Market is managed by the Market Umbrella, and the market location is rented from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities.

Contact Karen Atkinson, Market Manager, if you have suggestions for the Market.

More than 60 vendors, and over a thousand shoppers, kicked off opening day at the South of the James Market at Forest Hill Park.  A great neighborhood and community event.  Many thanks to the Parks Department which does so much to make this market successful.

Just another Saturday morning in Paradise, with Blanchard's, Koralee and Crossroads for a jump start, Rowland's, and Phal and Nate's tacos for a touch of breakfast bravado, and the flowers we wish we could grow, but cannot.

It's well-behaved dogs and occasionally behaved children, and the glue that holds communities and friendships together. It's a little economic engine throwing sparks from Westmoreland to Farmville, and into craft room, studies and garden patches.

It's just another Saturday at South of the James.

The common images at the market are usually natural ones, the vibrancy of fruits and vegetables, the bursting ripeness of color.  This week, I thought we could take a look at a few of the images of creativity of a human nature...the crafts of jewel and wire, of threads and yarns, and dyes and clay.

Next week, body art...if we are brave.

Thanks to all who lent a body part; thanks to the doctor who climbed on the truck to take pictures.

By the time we first see them Saturday morning, they've put in a full day.  They've driven from Madison or Westmoreland or Green Bay.

The market vendors are more than faceless clerks behind a register. When a visitors stands, early in the morning at the eastern end of the market, in the shade, and looks over the tents and canopies, and realizes, this is the best place to be, these are the people we thank.
